See this is what pisses me off about overly religous people..What makes you think in your mind that a child being killed by someone in the neighborhood is not supposed to happen? WTH? of course it can happen most victims are victimized by people they know. smh... parents please teach your kids and definitely don't let a 8yrold child walk seven blocks from camp to the damn house!!!! i don't care how close the neighborhood is with each other this is 2011!!!! things have changed

Should Essence Magazine Have a White Male Managing Editor?

by Dr. Boyce WatkinsEssence Magazine has made the interesting and controversial decision to hire a white male as its managing editor. I cocked my head to the side when I heard about the move by Editor-in-Chief Constance White to let Michael Bullerdick, a white male, run the day-to-day operations of a magazine which prides itself on being a voice for African American women. Constance went out of her way to do damage control on the decision by stating that Bullerdick would have no say on the editorial content of Essence.
“He has no involvement in editorial content of the black women’s publication,” the new Essence editor-in-chief, Constance White, told Journal-isms on Tuesday.
Do I buy White’s statement completely? No. It’s hard to imagine that a Managing Editor would not have an impact on which voices are reflected and how they are presented. That’s like Clarence Thomas saying that his wife’s conservative activism has no impact on his decisions as a Supreme Court justice. There’s a big difference between true separation of powers and the separation that simply looks good on an organizational chart.
This is not the first time Essence has gotten attention for putting a non-black person in a powerful position. There was some degree of public concern when Ellianna Placas was selected as the Fashion Director for the magazine, overlooking scores of seasoned and talented black women who can’t get jobs at other magazines. While one has to applaud those who simply believe that the best people are being chosen for these opportunities, we must also wonder if a black man could be named Managing Editor of a magazine for Jewish women.
I thought long and hard on this one, to ensure that I didn’t say anything that would be unfair to Bullerdick, a man who surely worked hard to earn his opportunities. At the same time, there must be consideration for the long list of talented black women who may have wanted this job, but find nearly every door to be shut in an industry that is owned by white folks. I’d love to see what lies in Bullerdick’s background that makes him a stronger voice for black women than black women themselves. Perhaps a group of black women should be used to make serious editorial decisions at Essence, rather than allowing the Editor-in-Chief to simply hire her professional friends. There is too much at stake for Essence leadership structure to be defined by cronyism.

Accountants say the man who caught the home run ball that Derek Jeter smashed for his 3,000th hit Saturday will have to pay as much as $14,000 in taxes, New York media report.Christian Lopez, 23, caught the ball and promptly handed it over to the Yankees without demanding any kind of payment, the Daily News reported. The Yankees rewarded him with suite seats for the rest of the season, plus a heap of autographed team memorabilia.
That's what could cost Lopez. According to The New York Times, the total value of the seats and loot could exceed $120,000. The IRS would consider that to be taxable income, several accountants told both newspapers.
However, if it were construed as a gift, it would not be taxable, Columbia University law professor Michael J. Graetz told the Times.
"The legal question of whether it is a gift or prize is whether the transferor is giving the property out of detached and disinterested generosity," Graetz said. "It's hard for me, not being a Yankee fan, to think of the Yankees as being in the business of exercising generosity to others, but there's a reasonable case to be made that these were given out of generosity."
For his part, Lopez is being just as magnanimous with the IRS as he was with Jeter.
"Worse comes to worse, I'll have to pay the taxes," he told the Daily News. "... The IRS has a job to do, so I'm not going to hold it against them, but it would be cool if they helped me out a little on this."

Hugh Hefner: I'm alive and kicking
The Internet apparently tried to claim the life of another celebrity last night, as social media reports circulated that Playboy founder Hugh Hefner had died.
The 85-year-old cleared up the gossip on his Twitter account, writing, “The rumors of my death are, as Mark Twain observed in a similar situation, greatly exaggerated. I'm very much alive & kicking.”And to prove how much alive, he added, “I'm lying in bed next to [my girlfriend] Shera with a big smile on my face, reading tweets about my unexpected demise.”
A lot of the tweets were sent by confused users, like @WolfesMother: “Weird rumour doing the rounds...Hugh Hefner has gone to the big mansion in the sky?! Prob just a rumour, cause he's immortal right?!”
Tuesday morning, Hef’s name was a trending topic on Twitter, but it was thanks to users trying to explain that the famed bachelor hasn’t departed yet. Wrote @nattymichelle: “Confession: I felt sad that Hugh Hefner died until I realized it was a hoax. Not nice, Twitterers!”
Perhaps the reports started because someone was concerned heartbreak would do Hef in, seeing that he went through a very public breakup with his former fiancee Crystal Harris in June. But any concern seems to be unwarranted - not only does he have a few new girlfriends, but he's also looking forward to Lifetime's special about his wedding-that-almost-was.
"The guys & I watched an early edit of 'Hef's Runaway Bride' tonight," he wrote after confirming he's still alive. "The fans are going to love it."
